I know, I know... After my last ALEGRIA experience, I vowed never to return. Well, my one condition was if I had gained weight and built up some muscle. That was back in October 2005. And today, I probably weigh the same and I am no more built than back then. So, why did I decide to go? I'm not really sure. One reason may be the free ticket that my friend (who works there) managed to get me. Or maybe because this year I knew a lot more people that were going to be there that I could hang out with. Who knows why, but I'm glad that I went.
ALEGRIA Tribal V was held at Crobar (as per the usual) yesterday, or should I say this morning. I again attended with Stephen although this time he was sans boyfriend. This time he brought along a friend of his whom I have met before. Kris is a very friendly and very adorable British lad with a cute face and a sexy body. And he's a good dancer. Bringing friends to ALEGRIA is totally fine, bringing a boyfriend is not. Keep that in mind, kids.
So, anyway, we headed over to Crobar a little after midnight only to be met with a line that was probably about 40 minutes long. And it was cold. I gave my friend a call to see if we could skip the line and he told us to come right up. WOOHOO!! No wait. Gotta love that in NYC. I had to meet him anyway to get my ticket, but this was bonus. We went through security (which was extra heavy because of Crobar being shut down the weekend before due to drug sales/possession in the club as well as underage drinking). Security checks EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE. They are not afraid to check under the jewels, if you know what I mean. We passed through where I grabbed my ticket and we waited for Kris to get his from will call. While Steve and I are waiting, my friend pulls out 3 VIP wristbands and starts slapping them on us. Totally unexpected, it was the highlight of everyone's night I'm pretty sure. This basically gave us access to the less crowded upstairs area where we could also get free drinks and snacks, and use a less busy bathroom. Doesn't sound like much, but it was a very nice luxury to have. I couldn't thank my friend enough for being so generous.
Off we go inside... like any other ALEGRIA event, the place was already extremely busy. Throughout the night I bumped in to so many people that I knew, even people from Boston. Right about 300a was probably the peak attendance hour. The dance floor was like a sardine can of shirtless muscle boys, packed in and dripping with salty sweat. Hahaha! It was very similar to this pic from ALEGRIA Pride.
Other than that, there's not much more to say. The music, by ROSABEL, was beyond amazing and pretty much kept me dancing for nearly 6 hrs with just a few short bathroom breaks. I know the music is good when I don't want to get off the dance floor, even with people bumping into me the whole time. There's just something about good music that gives me a lot of positive energy that comes out in dancing.
I left this morning around 600a, grabbed a drink from the corner store and hopped into a cab. Got home, relaxed a bit, and then fell asleep on the couch. This was a much better experience than the last time. I had a ton of fun with Stephen and Kris and enjoyed myself the entire night. So, I venture a guess that you may just see me at another ALEGRIA sometime soon.
