After 16 years of hosting gay nightlife, the ROXY had a spectacular closing event on Saturday, March 10 that lasted until noon on Sunday. The night opened with DJ James Anderson and was anchored by Offer Nissim and Peter Rauhofer, all of whom have had spectacular runs at the ROXY in the past. Final estimates place the number of patrons that came through between 10pm Saturday and noon Sunday at 4000. It was simply spectacular.
While I don't have a close bond or connection with the ROXY, many people do and I can understand why. The ROXY had this energy that I have not felt at another other club, in NYC or anywhere. Going to the ROXY was always a happy time for me... I was out with friends, I was dancing, I was enjoying life and not worried about anything else; the energy of the club washed everything else away. It will be interesting to see if any other place will be able to have the same effect on me as this place.
Stephen, Kris, Brian W and myself made it over to 18th Street around 10pm and the line to get in already stretched around the block onto the West Side Highway. Stephen and Brian hit the gold card line and Kris and I waited with the common folk for the next hour and 45 minutes, watching the boys stream by to get in line behind us. Pete joined Kris and I just as it started to drizzle, but we made it inside before the downpour.
So, $130 later, we finally make it inside... the place is PACKED! Pushing room only. We found Brian and Stephen and made our way to the dance floor. The energy was simply amazing, so much so that it can't even be described.
There aren't many details beyond dancing, hot sweaty shirtless men, and dancing. LOL! I'm definitely glad that I was able to experience such an amazing and legendary event with my closest friends and my entire gay "family."
